Excerpt from the book:
\"Fortunately, the part of the stream wherein the boy\'s car came to rest was not deep enough, even in flood conditions, to submerge the car. Not only was this lucky but the bank of the stream was soft and squelchy and provided the safest of all possible landings.
The car had bounced twice. The hillside nearest to the road was covered with thick bushes. Thomas, in the process of freeing the parcel from his waistband at the time of the skid was the only one not inside his safety belt. The impact of the first bounce burst open the doors on the passenger side.
Thomas was literally hurled out, upside down. The other two instinctively braced themselves back against their seats and, held in place by their seat belts, were sitting upright when the car came to rest, right side up, just inside the stream. The bonnet was twisted, the front half pointing heaven-ward, the roof was severely dented, the driver\'s side was dented with the doors jammed inwards and there was one crumpled door on the passenger side and part of it had been driven inwards, crushing David\'s luckless ribs. There were hardly two square centimetres of unbroken glass to be seen anywhere on the vehicle.
The juggernaut had neither heard nor seen the accident and had disappeared beyond its grimy exhaust. The blue saloon braked briefly then sped on. This astonished and infuriated the driver of a high van, following, who had seen it all from his elevated position. He pulled up sharply and jumped out. He waved frantically to caution traffic further back and raced to the side of the road to look down the bank. The car had just come to rest at the bottom, there was no sign of movement."
